Best Mattress for Your Sleep Style

Back pain, side sleeping, stomach sleeping, heavy sleepers, couples – the answer always starts with your body weight. Here's how to get it right.

Why body weight matters more than how you sleep

Most mattress brands recommend firmness based on sleeping position. Side sleepers get soft. Back sleepers get medium. Stomach sleepers get firm. It's simple, it's easy to market, and it's wrong.

A 60kg side sleeper and a 100kg side sleeper need completely different spring tensions. If you give them both a "soft" mattress, the 60kg person floats comfortably while the 100kg person sinks through and wakes up with back pain. Same sleep style, opposite outcomes. The variable that actually matters is body weight.

We choose the latex surface feel first, then use that choice and body weight to select the spring support. Sleep position helps us choose the cushioning. About 82% of customers stay with the initial recommendation without needing an adjustment.

Once you have the right support for your weight and latex choice, sleep position helps choose the cushioning. Side sleepers usually prefer 2 micro spring layers, while stomach sleepers usually prefer 1.

The most common question

Back pain and mattresses

If you're waking up with lower back pain that fades during the day, your mattress is almost certainly the problem. But the fix isn't as simple as "buy a firm mattress."

Back pain from a mattress usually comes from one of two things: sinking in too much (not enough support) or not sinking in enough (too much pressure on your hips and shoulders). Both cause your spine to sit out of alignment while you sleep. The solution depends on your body weight, not on buying the firmest or softest option available.

We see this constantly at our Gladesville showroom. Someone comes in convinced they need a firm mattress because that's what their physio said, but when we match the springs to their weight and let them lie down, the right support often turns out to be medium. The springs hold their hips at the correct height, the latex cushions the pressure points, and the pain goes away. It's not magic - it's just getting the spring tension right.

If you've had pain with firm mattresses in the past, tell us before ordering so we can check the latex, spring support and cushioning together. You get 2 free firmness swaps during our 7-month trial, so there's room to adjust.

Side, back, stomach

Mattresses by sleep position

Sleep position is real - it does affect which mattress feels best. It's just not the starting point. Once the latex feel and spring support are selected, sleep position helps refine the cushioning.

Side sleepers put concentrated pressure on their shoulders and hips. You need a surface that lets those points sink in without the rest of the mattress collapsing. The Cloud is our most popular model for side sleepers - its 3,200 microsprings (on a queen) provide two layers of cushioning that contour around pressure points. If you wake up with numb arms or sore shoulders, extra cushioning at these points is usually the fix.

Back sleepers need even support across the full length of the spine. Too soft and your hips drop, creating a curve in your lower back. Too firm and pressure builds at your shoulders and tailbone. The Aurora tends to suit back sleepers well - one layer of microsprings provides enough cushioning without too much sink.

Stomach sleepers need firmer support to prevent the lower back from arching. The Aurora is usually the right starting point because its single micro spring layer creates a flatter, more direct surface. Too soft and your pelvis sags, which puts strain on your spine all night.

Combination sleepers change position throughout the night. Either model can work because the natural latex and pocket springs are responsive - they bounce back immediately when you move, unlike memory foam, which holds its shape and makes repositioning harder.

Bigger bodies, different needs

Mattresses for heavier sleepers

If you’re over 100kg, many mattresses do not provide enough support. A standard “firm” option often changes the foam on top without changing the spring unit underneath.

At 100kg and over, firm springs are the standard starting point with either soft or medium latex. With soft latex, firm springs start earlier, at 80kg. That gives you stronger support underneath without forcing you onto a hard surface.

The surface feel is a separate choice. Soft latex feels plush, while medium latex feels balanced and responsive. Most side sleepers also prefer the Cloud’s 2 micro spring layers for extra cushioning around the shoulders and hips.
