Most brands answer this question with sleeping style – side sleepers get soft, back and stomach sleepers get firm. That's an oversimplification, and it's why so many people end up with the wrong mattress.

Your body weight is the primary factor. A 60kg side sleeper and a 100kg side sleeper need completely different spring tensions to maintain spinal alignment. Sleeping style matters, but it's secondary to getting the springs matched to your weight. Get that wrong, and no amount of premium foam on top will fix it.

At Ausbeds, we use a 16-level firmness system matched to body weight:

• Under 50kg — Level 3 (Softer). Only available in the Cloud.
• 50–70kg — Level 6 (Medium). Available in the Aurora and Cloud.
• 70–90kg — Level 9 (Firmer). Available in all three models.
• 90–110kg — Level 12 (Very Firm). Available in all three models.
• Over 110kg — Level 15 (Super Firm). Available in all three models.

Within each range, you get three levels you can adjust at home by repositioning internal components.

From there, sleeping style fine-tunes the choice. Side sleepers often benefit from the Cloud's extra micro spring layers, which cushion pressure points at the shoulders and hips. Back and stomach sleepers generally do well on the Aurora or Cooper, where there's less sink and more direct support to keep the spine in a neutral position. Heavier sleepers in particular may want extra support from the Cooper, which has the most direct feel.

The correct mattress firmness isn't something you guess from a label in a showroom. It starts with your weight, then your build, then your preference. That's the order. A standard Australian queen mattress measures 153cm in width by 203cm in length. Here's how the queen mattress size compares.

• Single mattress: 91cm width × 188cm length
• Double mattress: 137cm width × 188cm length
• Queen mattress: 153cm width × 203cm length
• King mattress: 183cm width × 203cm length

Moving from a double mattress to a queen gives you an extra 16cm in width and 15cm in length, enough extra space to noticeably reduce partner disturbance. A queen-size bed is the most popular size mattress in Australia, used by roughly 61% of households.

If you want extra wiggle room, a king bed adds 30cm of width. But for most couples, a queen bed mattress strikes the right balance between sleeping space and bedroom footprint.

All models use GOLS-certified natural latex and just 5cm of foam on top. Less foam means cooler sleep, unlike a typical bed-in-a-box brand with 25–30cm of solid foam that traps heat.
