Best Mattress for Your Sleep Style
Why body weight matters more than how you sleep
Most mattress brands recommend firmness based on sleeping position. Side sleepers get soft. Back sleepers get medium. Stomach sleepers get firm. It's simple, it's easy to market, and it's wrong.
A 60kg side sleeper and a 100kg side sleeper need completely different spring tensions. If you give them both a "soft" mattress, the 60kg person floats comfortably while the 100kg person sinks through and wakes up with back pain. Same sleep style, opposite outcomes. The variable that actually matters is body weight.
We match spring tension to your body weight first, then fine-tune based on how you sleep and what you prefer. That order matters. About 82% of our customers stay at their weight-based recommendation without needing any adjustment. The system works because it starts with physics, not a marketing label.
Once you've got the right support for your weight, sleep position tells you which model to lean towards and whether to go slightly softer or firmer within your range. That's where the articles below come in.
Back pain and mattresses
If you're waking up with lower back pain that fades during the day, your mattress is almost certainly the problem. But the fix isn't as simple as "buy a firm mattress."
Back pain from a mattress usually comes from one of two things: sinking in too much (not enough support) or not sinking in enough (too much pressure on your hips and shoulders). Both cause your spine to sit out of alignment while you sleep. The solution depends on your body weight, not on buying the firmest or softest option available.
We see this constantly at our Marrickville showroom. Someone comes in convinced they need a firm mattress because that's what their physio said, but when we match the springs to their weight and let them lie down, the right support often turns out to be medium. The springs hold their hips at the correct height, the latex cushions the pressure points, and the pain goes away. It's not magic - it's just getting the spring tension right.
If you've had pain with firm mattresses in the past, consider starting one firmness level softer than your weight recommendation. You get 2 free component swaps during our 7-month trial, so there's room to adjust.
Mattresses by sleep position
Sleep position is real - it does affect which mattress feels best. It's just not the starting point. Once you know your weight-based firmness, here's how sleep position refines the choice.
Side sleepers put concentrated pressure on their shoulders and hips. You need a surface that lets those points sink in without the rest of the mattress collapsing. The Cloud is our most popular model for side sleepers - its 3,200 microsprings (on a queen) provide two layers of cushioning that contour around pressure points. If you wake up with numb arms or sore shoulders, extra cushioning at these points is usually the fix.
Back sleepers need even support across the full length of the spine. Too soft and your hips drop, creating a curve in your lower back. Too firm and pressure builds at your shoulders and tailbone. The Aurora tends to suit back sleepers well - one layer of microsprings provides enough cushioning without too much sink.
Stomach sleepers need firmer support to prevent the lower back from arching. The Aurora or Cooper at your recommended firmness or one level firmer is usually the right starting point. Too soft and your pelvis sags, which puts strain on your spine all night.
Combination sleepers change position throughout the night. Any of our models work because the natural latex and pocket springs are responsive - they bounce back immediately when you move, unlike memory foam, which holds its shape and makes repositioning harder.
Mattresses for heavier sleepers
If you're over 100kg, most mattresses don't support you properly. Standard "firm" options from most brands use the same spring unit as their medium - they just put less foam on top. That's not more support. That's less cushioning with the same inadequate base.
We build mattresses with spring tensions specifically calibrated for heavier body weights. Our Very Firm range (Level 12) suits 100-120kg, and our Super Firm range (Level 15) suits over 120kg. The springs are physically different - stiffer gauge wire that holds your weight without bottoming out.
All three models (Cooper, Aurora, Cloud) are available at these firmness levels. Heavier sleepers don't need to sacrifice cushioning for support - you can have a Cloud at Level 12 and get both the microspring comfort layers and the firm spring base underneath.
If you're over 120kg and want something beyond Level 15, call us on (02) 8999 3333. We can customise beyond our standard range.
