Australian Made Mattresses by Ausbeds – Built to Order in Sydney

Ausbeds mattresses are built by hand in our Sydney factory, matched to your body weight, and adjustable for life. Shop direct from the maker – no middlemen, no inflated prices.
Karl van Lieshout, founder of Ausbeds, inside the Marrickville workshop

Most people searching for Australian-made mattresses already know why local matters. You don't need a lecture on supporting local manufacturing – you need to find the right mattress, from a maker you can trust, and know it's going to last.

I've spent over 15 years handcrafting mattresses in our Marrickville factory and store. Every mattress we sell is Australian-made, built to order, and designed to be the last mattress you'll ever buy. Not because we use that as a slogan – but because our products are modular, adjustable, and made from materials that don't break down the way cheap foam does. I've watched people go through mattress after mattress in their lives – spending thousands on products that sag within a few years. That cycle stops here.

If you're ready to buy, you can shop our range below. If you want to understand what makes our mattresses different from other Australian-made options on the market, read on.

What "Australian made" means (and doesn't mean)

Go somewhere that makes the bloody things. This isn't controversial news. People who make something know more about that thing than people who don't. Find a mattress company that you can walk into the factory and see them making the mattresses.

Not all Australian-made mattresses are made the same way. Some large manufacturers produce mattresses here simply because it's cheaper than shipping finished products from overseas – they run high-volume production lines, use low-cost materials, and sell through every retailer in the country. The "Australian-made" label is real, but it doesn't tell you much about the quality of the product or the care that went into it.

At Ausbeds, we're upfront about how our mattresses are made. Some of our materials come from overseas, and there's a good reason for that:

  • Natural latex – Ours is GOLS-certified (95% organic) and comes from Sri Lanka. Rubber trees only grow in tropical climates, so Malaysia and Sri Lanka are where the world's natural latex is produced. We source from Sri Lanka because the quality is consistently high.

  • Pocket springs – Our spring systems come from specialist manufacturers in China. The best pocket springs in the world are made there – it's where the tooling, the wire quality, and the production expertise are concentrated.

  • Everything else – Our Tencel covers, Australian pine bed bases, foams, and felt layers are locally sourced materials from Australian suppliers. Shorter supply chains for these components are better for the environment and give us direct quality control.

What makes us Australian-made is what happens once those materials arrive at our Marrickville factory. Every mattress is hand-assembled, fitted to your body weight, and quality-checked before it leaves. We build each mattress to order. That's a different kind of Australian made from a factory that churns out thousands of identical mattresses a week.

Here's what I'd recommend you actually look for when comparing Australian-made:

What to check Why it matters What Ausbeds does
Who chooses the materials and why Cheap materials assembled locally are still cheap materials. What matters is whether the maker has selected each component for performance and durability – not just cost. We source the best materials from where they're made best – GOLS-certified latex from Sri Lanka, specialist pocket springs from China, and local suppliers for covers and bases.
Whether firmness is matched to your body Most brands stock set firmness levels and expect you to choose. This leads to mattresses that are too firm or too soft for your weight. We match spring tension to your body weight. A 55kg person gets different springs from a 110kg person.
How long the materials last Synthetic foam compresses over time. Natural latex lasts 3–4x longer than foam. That's the kind of durability that protects what you spend.
Whether you can adjust it later Your body changes, your preferences change. A mattress you can't adjust becomes a mattress you replace. Modular design – swap microspring layers, adjust firmness at home, or change components during your 7-month trial.

According to Bedbuyer's national sleep survey, 80% of Australians prefer to buy Australian-made products when given the option. But preference alone doesn't guarantee a great night's sleep – the construction, the fitting, and a commitment to sustainability all matter just as much.

Our three mattresses

All our Ausbeds mattresses share the same pocket spring core, the same natural latex comfort layer, and the same zippered Tencel cover. The only difference is the microspring layers, which change how much cushioning and support you get.

Layers of an Ausbeds mattress

  • No microspring layers
  • Firmness range: 8–16

  • Chosen by 12% of our customers

Aurora – Medium cushioning

  • 1 layer of microsprings (1,600 on a queen)
  • Firmness range: 5–16

  • Chosen by 19% of our customers

Cloud – More cushioning [⭐ Most popular]

  • From $2,050 (Single) / $2,950 (Queen)
  • 2 layers of microsprings (3,200 on a queen)
  • Firmness range: 2–16
  • Designed for side sleepers – the extra microsprings let shoulders and hips sink in for comfortable, restorative sleep
  • Chosen by 69% of our customers

All sizes available: Single, King Single, Double, Queen, and King.

Not sure which to choose? Use our chatbot to recommend a firmness based on your body weight, then pick your cushioning level. And because all three models share the same modular system, you can move between them at any time by adding or removing microspring layers. No need to purchase a new mattress – just swap the components.

Why "the last mattress you'll ever buy" isn't just marketing

A small factory will go to the ends of the earth to make sure you are happy because the owner is probably going to talk to you directly, so they are much more connected to you. It's very hard to let someone down after you've looked them in the eye.

I designed our mattresses to stop the cycle of buying, tolerating, and replacing beds every 7–10 years. Here's how:

Modular design. Every component – springs, latex, microsprings, felt adjustment layer – can be swapped independently. Two free component swaps are included during your 7-month trial, and you can order swaps after that. If your body changes over time, you change the mattress with it.

Materials that last. Natural latex doesn't dip or sag – it lasts 3–4 times longer than synthetic foam. Our honeycomb pocket springs (986 in a queen, compared to the industry standard of 768) provide durability and better contouring than standard configurations.

Body-weight fitting. Most people end up on the wrong firmness because manufacturers don't account for body weight. We match spring tension to your weight, which means the mattress supports you properly from the start. When the support is right, the materials last longer too – they're not being compressed beyond their designed load.

Sizes, beds, and bases

We stock mattresses in all standard Australian sizes – Single, King Single, Double, Queen, and King.

Size Dimensions Available in all models
Single 92cm × 187cm
King Single 107cm × 203cm
Double 138cm × 187cm
Queen 153cm × 203cm
King 183cm × 203cm

All sizes are made to order. You can filter by size and sort by model on our website to find mattresses that suit your bedroom and your budget.

Our mattresses work on adjustable bases and suit most bed frames – as long as the slats don't flex. Flexible slats are the number one cause of mattress-related back pain I see in our store. If your current frame has bendy slats, that's likely affecting your sleep and your wellbeing more than you realise. Healthy sleep starts with proper support from the base up.

Our Slimline Bed Base is a solid pine, Australian-made base designed to be paired with our mattresses. We stock these in all sizes. It stands 30cm high with removable legs, and the king bases come in two pieces for easier handling. Plenty of storage underneath. Only sold with a mattress purchase.

  • 7-month trial
  • 2 free component swaps during trial

  • Free factory pickup from Marrickville

What our craftsmanship looks like

I'm proud to talk about local craftsmanship because it's not just a label for us – it's how every mattress gets made. Here's what happens at our Marrickville factory:

Top mattress complaints in Australia
  1. Spring selection – We match pocket spring tension to your body weight. Our springs are arranged in a honeycomb pattern (the same layout used by Hastens, Vispring, and Savoir – makers with partnerships spanning generations), so we can fit more springs per mattress. More support, more comfort, more durability.

  2. Latex and microspring assembly – GOLS-certified natural latex and microspring layers are hand-assembled inside our manufactured Tencel cover that zips all the way off. Everything is designed to be accessed, swapped, and adjusted.

  3. Quality check and delivery – Every mattress is checked with care before it leaves the factory. We deliver full-size to your bedroom, unpack, set up, and remove all packaging.

This hands-on experience is something you won't find from mattress brands that stock pre-made products in a warehouse. When you purchase from Ausbeds, you're buying from the people who actually build your bed – and who care about your night's sleep as much as you do.
