Origin is an online mattress brand best known for low-cost bed-in-a-box mattresses. In Australia, the main Origin mattress range includes the Origin Hybrid, Origin Hybrid Pro and Origin LumbarCloud. The Origin Hybrid Mattress is the entry model: foam comfort layers over a 7-zone pocket spring system. The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress adds micro springs and a reversible comfort layer, giving you two surface feels. The Origin LumbarCloud Mattress is the thickest option in the range, with more foam layers, micro springs, foam-capped pocket springs and Origin’s EdgeGuard Stability system.

Ausbeds is my mattress factory in Sydney. The Aurora is best if you want a full-size hybrid mattress set up around your body weight, with springs and latex that can be changed later.

1. Bodyweight-matched firmness

The Origin Hybrid mattress gives you one supplied firmness, described by Origin as medium firm or firm. The Origin Hybrid Pro gives two surface feels by flipping the comfort insert. The LumbarCloud gives a thicker, more cushioned Origin build with one supplied feel.

Those options are simple, and that suits plenty of people. The trade-off is that the main spring system does not appear to change for body weight in the public specs I found.

At Ausbeds, body weight determines the spring unit. A 60kg side sleeper and a 100kg back sleeper should not start on the same spring tension, because they load the mattress in completely different ways.

2. Natural latex and micro springs

Origin uses foam comfort layers across this range, with names like CloudComfort memory foam, HexaGrid, HexaGrid Plus Ortho and AlignFlex. Foam can feel comfortable, and it's what a lot of people used to.

At Ausbeds, we use 5cm of GOLS-certified organic latex over micro springs and pocket springs. Latex feels springy and responsive rather than slow-sinking. I use it because it's durable and it cushions well without needing a large stack of memory foam.

3. Material transparency

With mattresses, you want to know what's inside and what you're paying for.

Origin uses names like CloudComfort memory foam, HexaGrid, HexaGrid Plus Ortho and AlignFlex, but those names don’t tell you the actual material or specs. Many of those layers appear to be polyurethane foam, memory foam or grid-style foam. That’s normal in boxed mattresses, but the useful details are missing: density, layer thickness, spring wire gauge and spring turn count.

At Ausbeds, I publish the latex densities, spring gauges, spring turns, spring counts and the materials used, because that’s what lets you compare. For the Aurora: 5cm natural latex, latex densities of 55, 70 or 90kg/m³, 1,600 micro springs in queen, 986 honeycomb pocket springs in queen, plus spring wire gauges and turn counts for each support range.

That does not necessarily make the Origin Hybrid mattress a bad mattress. It just means there's not enough info about what's inside.

4. Every Ausbeds component can be changed

Most mattresses are sealed. If the feel is wrong, you have to return the whole mattress. If a comfort layer softens years later, you usually replace the whole bed.

The Aurora is built differently. The whole cover unzips, and the latex, micro springs, felt, pocket springs and cover can all be accessed, swapped and replaced.

During the 7-month trial, you get 2 free component swaps. That means, if you're uncomfortable, you can request that we swap your springs or latex until it's just right. After the trial, no component costs more than 25% of the mattress price. The aim is to fix the part that needs changing, not throw away a whole mattress. That's why I call it a buy-for-life mattress.

What’s inside each mattress?

Origin Hybrid Mattress

Origin lists a removable Tencel cover, plush microfibre cushioning, CloudComfort memory foam, an Ortho layer based around the HexaGrid design, a 7-zone pocket spring system and an anti-slip base finish.

That is a simple hybrid design at the lowest price in this comparison. For a deeper technical comparison, I’d ask their team for the foam densities, layer thicknesses and spring specs.

Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

The Origin Hybrid Pro mattress adds a dual-season washable cover, a reversible comfort layer, micro springs and a 7-zone pocket spring core. Origin describes the reversible layer as giving a medium-firm side and a firm side.

This is the Origin model I’d compare most closely with the Aurora because it has micro springs and more than one surface feel. The difference is that Aurora changes the spring unit for the sleeper’s body weight, while the Hybrid Pro changes the comfort insert.

Origin LumbarCloud Mattress

The Origin LumbarCloud mattress is the thickest Origin model in this comparison at 35cm. Origin lists a pillowtop, memory foam, open-cell foam, HexaGrid-style material, micro springs, transition foam, foam-capped pocket springs and EdgeGuard Stability around the perimeter.

This is the Origin option for someone who wants a more cushioned Origin build and more edge support. With that many foam layers, I wonder about heat (as a general rule, more foam = more heat) and durability.

Ausbeds Aurora

From top to bottom, the Aurora uses:

• Tencel cover (washable)

• 5cm of GOLS-certified natural latex

• One layer of micro springs (1,600 micro springs in a queen)

• Pocket springs (986 springs in a honeycomb pattern)

• Felt (can be moved above or below the pocket springs to change the spring tension)

Price and value

Origin wins on upfront price. The advertised prices are some of the lowest bed-in-a-box prices around.

If your budget is tight, the Origin Hybrid mattress is the obvious price-led option.

Aurora is about a different type of value. You are paying for natural latex, a heavier full-size build, micro springs, published spring specs, body-weight matching and the ability to change parts later.

Firmness and body weight

Firmness labels only tell part of the story. A medium-firm mattress can feel firm to a 50kg sleeper and soft to a 100kg sleeper, because each person compresses the mattress differently.

The Origin Hybrid mattress keeps the choice simple with one supplied medium-firm feel. The Hybrid Pro gives two surface options. That can work well if you're of an average body weight and your body likes that firmness range.

At Ausbeds, we start with weight and then fine-tune for sleep position and preference. The spring unit does the support work, then the latex and micro springs handle cushioning.

Springs and zoning

Origin uses zoned pocket springs. Zoning means different parts of the mattress are designed to support different body areas.

I used to make zoned mattresses, then stopped. People don't always line up with fixed zones in a neat way. Height, hip width, shoulder width, gender and sleep position all change where your body lands. A man usually has different proportions from a woman.

The Aurora uses single-zone honeycomb pocket springs. The type of springs we use changes according to a person’s weight. In my experience, it's more reliable than zoned layouts.

Temperature

The most important rule for temperature is: more foam = more heat.

Companies may have foams with phase-changing "cooling gel", graphite/copper foams, and airflow channels, but these are mostly marketing gimmicks. These materials may delay the time that the mattress starts to heat up, but they cannot change the physics. Foam stores heat more effectively than air. The amount of foam in a mattress determines the amount of heat storage.

The Origin Hybrid mattress uses memory foam and other foam layers. The Hybrid Pro and LumbarCloud add more layers, with LumbarCloud being the thickest Origin design in this comparison.

The Aurora uses 5cm of latex over micro springs and pocket springs. Latex is still a foam, but it is natural, open cell and breathable. If memory foam has slept hot for you before, this is worth paying attention to.

Trial and warranty

Origin offers a 120-night trial across these mattresses. Origin’s terms say you need to try the mattress for at least 25 nights before requesting a return. Origin also lists a 15-year warranty that covers indentations over 2.5cm.

Ausbeds offers a 7-month trial with 2 free component swaps. If the Aurora feels too firm or too soft, we allow you to swap the latex or the pocket springs until the right firmness is achieved. Do not judge a mattress only by the warranty length. Read reviews and judge whether the company made the returns process easy.

Delivery and handling

Origin mattresses are compressed and delivered in a box. That is convenient, especially if you need next-day delivery or you're outside metro areas.

The Aurora is delivered full-size. We do not roll it because rolling means we cannot use the same steel border wire for edge support. The trade-off is that Aurora is heavier and less convenient to deliver.
