The Cooper Just Got an Upgrade: Here's What Changed and Why

We've updated the Cooper. It's no longer a polyfoam mattress. The Cooper has been our entry-level mattress for years: honest, adjustable, and built to the same standard as everything else we make. But the comfort layer was always polyfoam, and we've always been upfront about what that means: great value, good durability, but not the same feel as latex. That's changed. The new Cooper now uses natural latex in the comfort layer, the same latex we use in the Aurora and the Cloud. Same cover. Same pocket spring system. Same modular zip design. The only difference between the new Cooper and the Aurora is that the Cooper has no microspring layer. That gives it a firmer, more direct feel: you're sleeping on the mattress, not sinking into it. Here's what that actually means in plain language.

What's changed

Before: The Cooper used high-density polyfoam as its comfort layer. It was our most budget-friendly option, a solid mattress especially suited to guest beds, kids' rooms, or anyone who didn't need the bounce and pressure relief of latex.

Now: The Cooper uses the same natural latex as the Aurora and Cloud. It still has no microspring layer, which means it delivers a firmer, more responsive feel: less cushioning, more direct support.
The price reflects this. The Cooper now starts at $1,050 for a Single and $1,950 for a Queen. That's a jump, and we think it's worth explaining.

Why we made the switch

Polyfoam does the job. We've never hidden the fact that foam is the first thing to wear in a mattress. We've always compared it to a tyre: it works, it's replaceable, and for the right sleeper, it made perfect sense.

Natural latex lasts 10-20 years. High-density polyfoam, depending on use, starts to soften meaningfully after 5-7. We replaced the polyfoam because we make mattresses to last, and we think the Cooper should too.

Who the new Cooper is for

The new Cooper suits sleepers who:

  • Prefer sleeping on their mattress rather than sinking into it
  • Tend toward a firmer feel (we've calibrated it for the 8-16 range)
  • Weigh between 80-110kg (our spring units are matched to your bodyweight)
  • Want natural latex without the extra cushioning that comes with microsprings
  • Are looking for a durable, no-fuss mattress that punches well above its price

If you're a side sleeper who wants maximum pressure relief, the Cloud is probably your pick. If you want latex with a softer, more cushioned feel, the Aurora sits in the middle. The Cooper is now the latex option for people who want support without softness.

Same core Ausbeds build

Everything that defines an Ausbeds mattress is still here:

  • 986 honeycomb pocket springs (queen), calibrated to your bodyweight
  • Modular zip design: open it up, adjust it, swap layers, no tech visits needed for basic adjustments
  • Breathable cover
  • 10-year warranty
7-month comfort trial with up to 2 free component swaps if at-home adjustments aren't enough
  • Made in Marrickville, every mattress, by us

The Cooper has always been built on the same foundation as our premium mattresses. The comfort layer is now too.

A note on the old Cooper

If you bought the polyfoam Cooper and you're happy with it, great. It's still a solid mattress, and the modular design means you can replace or upgrade your comfort layer whenever you're ready. If you've been thinking about switching to latex, it's a straightforward upgrade. Give us a call and we'll walk you through it.

The honest version of upgrading

We don't do sales. We don't inflate a price to run a discount. When the Cooper went up in price, it's because the materials went up in quality. If you want a budget entry into the Ausbeds system, we'll always be honest with you about where that sits. The Cooper used to be "great for the price." Now it's just great.

Come try it in the showroom, or chat to us if you're not sure which mattress is right for your body and sleep style.
