Whirlpool forum question – Anyone purchased the Origin Hybrid Pro & can recommend?
Karls answer – You can lump all of these bed-in-a-box together. They need to be cheap enough to make so they have enough margin to pay for digital marketing/customer acquisition costs, which are massive and getting bigger. PPC (google adwords, metamarketing costs are just massive, and because they are all competing against each other digitally, they are bidding each other up. Craziness.
What’s happening is the bed-in-a-box model, which is supposed to be better value because of the lower overheads (shop, staff), just has different overheads (shipping, customer acquisition cost). And actually, those costs are quite high. In my opinion, bed-in-a-box isn’t better value than retail. You get better pictures and cooler websites, but that’s about it. I mean, you can’t try them either, which makes it tougher. In America, many of these bed-in-a-box brands are now moving into retailers because the cost of digital ads is now too damn high.
Due to this, the materials usually last around 3 years on average before they dip. Of course, if you are a lighter person, they will go on for longer; they may go on for 7 years for some people. Although I don’t hear this often. I usually hear 3 or 4 years until people have had enough.
The springs are usually very firm, except for the Macoda, which is what I recommend for lighter people.
These mattresses aren’t going to cut it for a lot of adults looking for a long-term solution.
So they aren’t really better quality than retail. I’m not saying they won’t suit anyone. And I’m not saying don’t buy one; I’m just telling you what to expect. You could also go into a retailer and have the same durability issues depending on what you get. However, at the retailer, you can at least try a whole bunch first, which, in my opinion, increases the value massively.
Asking people which bed-in-a-box is best is next to impossible due to the fact that it’s impossible to transfer a feeling digitally over some text. Even if you could, mattress feel is subjective to your personal preferences, and what you feel will be different from what another person feels.
Despite all the marketing nonsense on these websites, these are all mostly just some springs with some foam on top. That’s it. They’re all the same. The springs are different, and the foam is different, and they feel different. But there’s no way to know which one will be for you unless you lay on it first.
So options are:
- Go retail
- Cons: Salespeople
- Pros: Try it first—but always make sure you can change it if you hate it.
- Go online
- Cons: Can’t try it
- Pros: Good return policy if you hate it—but returning it can be absolutely painful depending on how they do it and where you live. I’ve heard some bad stories here.
- Go independent
- Cons: You probably don’t live near one
- Pros: Price, quality, fitting knowledge (I am biased here as I am an independent, so take this with a grain of salt)”
