Don’t Let Flexible Slats Ruin Your Mattress Investment
At Ausbeds, we’ve seen firsthand how the wrong bed frame can ruin even the highest-quality mattress. Approximately 70% of mattress problems stem from one culprit: bed frames with flexible slats.
The Problem with Flexible Slats
When you lay on a bed frame with flexible slats, the mattress can “hammock” into the gaps, causing the middle to sag prematurely. Over time, this dipping not only damages your mattress but can lead to significant back pain.
“Flexible slats are bad! Avoid them. Higher-priced bed frames with flexible slats may work, however in my experience you are just adding an unknown variable to the equation when you buy a base with flexible slats.”
The Solution: Solid Slat Bed Frames
To ensure your mattress lasts and maintains its shape, we recommend choosing a bed frame with solid, rigid slats. Ensemble bed bases are an affordable and sturdy option, often preferable to many assembled bed frames.
For the best long-term results, invest in a quality bed frame made with rigid pine slats and hardwood side rails, head, and foot.
Solid Pine Slats
Rigid slats provide sturdy, unwavering support for your mattress.
Hardwood Frame
Quality hardwood side rails, head, and foot for long-lasting durability.
Proper Support
Give your mattress the foundation it needs to perform its best.
“The best mattress foundation is a dead flat concrete slab – get as close to that as possible. The biggest mattress destroyer is flexible slats – get rigid slats pretty please!”
Quick Fix for Existing Bed Frames
If you suspect your current bed frame has flexible slats but aren’t ready to replace it just yet, try this temporary solution:
- Check for any give or flexibility in the slats.
- If the slats are flexible, add a 4mm hardwood ply along the middle third of the base where your hips rest.
- Plan to upgrade to a solid slat frame as soon as possible for the health of your mattress and back.
Remember, even the most expensive mattress can’t compensate for an inadequate foundation. Give your mattress the support it needs by choosing a high-quality bed frame with rigid slats. Your back (and wallet) will thank you in the long run.
